It’s our goal at California Surgical Center to help you not only look your best, but to also feel your best. After surgery, Our surgeons may prescribe a lymphatic massage to some patients. A lymphatic massage is the best way to ease swelling, bruising, and discomfort after surgeries such as Liposuction or Abdominoplasty. While this detoxification process can boost immunity at any given time, it’s particularly helpful after these types of surgeries.
WHAT IS A LYMPHATIC MASSAGE?
Some patients experience post-surgery accumulation of liquid or tissues beneath the skin that can harden. The resulting fibrosis can cause bruising or soreness. Lymphatic massage is a type of gentle massage that encourages blood flow and lymph drainage to help relieve this fibrosis. Once the lymph is drained, the reabsorption process begins. The waste tissue will be carried back toward the heart and, ultimately, naturally removed from the body. Lymphatic massage is a very safe and effective way to speed the healing process and improve comfort post-surgery.
The lymphatic system flushes fluid through the body to help in the detoxifying process. Post-surgery, your lymphatic system may be damaged or backed up. A certified lymphatic massage therapist can help facilitate the movement of fluid, which will relieve pressure. This allows the lymphatic system to be at the height of effectiveness when a patient needs it most. For most patients, this massage can speed recovery, ease discomfort, help reduce stress and anxiety, and prevent and break up scar tissue. These types of massages have many other benefits, too, including detoxification, pain alleviation, and relaxation. Your immune system will also benefit from these massages, which is crucial during a post-operative time of healing.
WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT TO GET THIS SPECIFIC TYPE OF MASSAGE?
The massage has to be a lymphatic massage to help with the fibrosis. Other massages (particularly deep tissue massages) could actually hurt you as you’re trying to heal, so it is crucial to choose a massage therapist who has the correct certifications for lymphatic massage. Some people do their own lymphatic massages post-surgery, but this can be very labor intensive. We do lymphatic massages in-house, so no legwork is needed on your part. Your only job is to rest and heal.
Consider it a custom treatment, as our certified lymphatic massage therapist will target your specific needs to aid in your recovery. These gentle and slow massages usually last about 30 minutes to one hour. Our Dr. will advise on how many lymphatic massages will be right for your recovery.
WHAT SHOULD I DO AFTER MY LYMPHATIC MASSAGE?
After your lymphatic massage, it is important to drink plenty of water and get up and move around a bit. Most patients feel very relaxed after their massages and might be tempted to lie down, but a bit of movement will increase blood flow and speed up the healing process. You’ll need to follow your doctor’s specific recommendations for exercise and activity.
